September 2020 is designated Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise public awareness about non-pharmacologic options, such as chiropractic care, to safely and effectively relieve acute, subacute and as appropriate, chronic pain. Sponsored by The Wellness Center of NY.

Drug addiction often begins with opioid prescriptions for pain. Pain management should begin with chiropractic care as a first-line option to reduce pain and increase function for individuals who are suffering.”
In light of the harrowing statistics like those below, In 2018, more than 168 million opioid prescriptions were dispensed in the U.S.
⦁ In 2017, the number of overdose deaths involving any opioid was 6 times higher than it was in 1999.
⦁ 80% of heroin users reported using prescription opioids prior to heroin.
In March 2018, The Lancet recommended spinal manipulation as an effective approach to manage low back pain in its new three-part series – 94% of spinal manipulations in the U.S. are performed by a doctor of chiropractic.

According to Sherry McAllister, DC, executive vice president, Foundation For Chiropractic Progress, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to informing and educating the general public about the value of chiropractic care, says, “Healthcare providers across all disciplines should acknowledge chiropractic care to their patients as a safe and effective conservative care option prior to prescribing addictive and potentially fatal opioids. Prescription painkillers have yet to be proven effective for long-term pain management, and the public needs access to safe and effective drug-free options, including chiropractic.

The Drug-Free Pain Management Awareness Month observance will be included annually in the American Hospital Association official health care observance calendar. The Wellness Center of NY will be offering complimentary pain relief spinal screenings and consultations throughout the month of Septemebr.
