Emotions, Posture, and Subluxation

Being healthy and being happy go hand in hand. The opposite is also true: an unhealthy person often exhibits lack of energy and joy. Your inner chemistry is responsible for this and, ironically, patients that are often diagnosed as “chemically imbalanced” are treated with medication that further negatively affects their chemistry.

We are what are posture is.  When we are standing tall, we are elevated and upright.  This posture pattern is a more “healthy” posture.  The spine is supported, and the physiology of the body is usually functioning better.

Gravity is imposing its will every second of every day at a pressure of 14.8 pounds of pressure per square inch.  When the spine is in its ideal position, it acts like a spring able to support the entire body against gravity.  Whereas, a forward leaning, hunched posture is a stress inducing posture.  When the head is in a forward position, the measurable difference in oxygenation can be reduced by up to 30%.  If our body consistently receives less oxygen, the heart rate will increase.

Does sitting in a poor posture make you sad and will sitting up tall make us happy? Yes!  The mind and body connection does not mean it is all in our head, it means the brain is inside our head.  The nervous system, the system that controls all healing and function is made up of our brain and its connections through the spinal cord.

Research on mind-body connection has been focused on different areas including everything from employee enhancement, athletic performance, and airline pilots.  Think about the emotional state and postural position of the pilot the next time you fly.  Hopefully that pilot is sitting upright and allowing their body to be at peak performance.

What do coaches say after a defeat?  They tell their players “keep your heads up, you have nothing to be ashamed of.”  A losing posture is associated with a head-down posture and embarrassment.  A winning posture has the head held high, arms raised in victory.

Spinal postures and their effects have been studied by Chiropractors for decades.  Chiropractors correct spinal subluxations.  Subluxations are the resulting patterns of misalignments to the spine caused by either repetitive posture changes or trauma.  Modern health care has perennially treated emotional disorders with medicine.  Medicine is classified as chemical or biochemical, while it does have its merits, especially at the crisis level, it is not associated with wellness and a healthy lifestyle.  Chiropractors, on the other hand, study the effects of emotional health and well-being on the spine, as well as the role chiropractic adjustments can have on emotional health.

My biggest inspiration and the reason I believe in Chiropractic and the philosophy of helping the body to heal itself continues to be my late mother, Lila Fishel. She passed away from breast cancer in October of 2002. I watched the greatest medical minds in the world be defeated by cancer; it changed my world. Since then I have made a commitment to educate the world about the holistic approach to health and well-being – Chiropractic Medicine.
