When it comes to managing your weight, there is no shortage of information out there. With so many different diets and weight loss programs, it can be confusing to know just what is right for you. There’s no shortage of diets promising quick and easy results, but studies show that these diets limit nutritional intake and can be unhealthy.

They also don’t help you develop a lifestyle of choosing healthy foods and maintaining a physical fitness routine. In the long run, you could end up right back where you started. Getting to and maintaining a healthy weight is not only important for your general health, it also helps to prevent life-threatening diseases. You are more likely to suffer from serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, high blood pressure and cancer if you are overweight or obese. But what does it mean to be overweight or obese? Overweight is having extra body weight from muscle, bone, fat, and/or water. good indicator of whether or not you are overweight or obese is a measurement called BMI (Body Mass Index). It is calculated using one’s height and weight. It is by no means a perfect solution since it can overestimate body fat in athletes and others who have a muscular build, or underestimate body fat in older persons and others who have lost muscle. You can find a BMI calculator for adults and children on the CDC’s website, but remember, your weight is determined by many other factors including your family history.
