Overview: A subluxation is a misaligned spinal bone (vertebrae). The misaligned bone compresses the nerves of the spinal cord causing tension, irritation, and eventually damage to the Central Nervous System (CNS). The Central Nervous System is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and spinal nerves, and has totally control of all functions of the human body, including the body’s ability to heal. Any malfunction of this system can lead to lowered resistance to infection, allergies, illness and disease.

Subluxations are caused by a lifetime of stress and trauma on the joints and bones. Slips, falls, auto accidents, sports injuries, poor posture, bad sleeping habits, stress at work, or even childhood mishaps and the birthing process can cause the spinal cord to move out of its normal position.

Symptoms: Symptoms of vertebral subluxation can include:

  • Pain, tenderness, soreness and stiffness in the neck and/or back
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Spinal muscle spasms, tightness or weakness
  • Reduction in spinal mobility
  • Pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • Joint pain or stiffness
  • Low energy
  • Poor overall health
  • Reduced ability to heal tissue

Diagnosis

The only way to know for certain if you have vertebral subluxations is by getting an X-ray. In most cases, it is present without symptoms or warning. Typically, by the time symptoms of subluxation are experienced the condition has existed for many years.

Treatment

Treatment for subluxation includes adjustments to the spinal column to realign the vertebrae and take the pressure off the spinal nerves. Depending on the severity of the condition, multiple adjustments may be in order. Since all chiropractors are different, the style of treatment and your individual care plan may vary. The most important thing is to make sure your chiropractor is a licensed and trained professional.
